Giada, Font of Hope

Giada, Font of Hope costs {1}{W}, has flying and vigilance, and makes every Angel you cast enter with an extra +1/+1 counter for each Angel you already control. She also taps for {W} that can only be spent on Angel spells.

Two mana for a mana dork that doubles as a tribal lord. She's fast, she fixes the biggest problem Angels have (their mana cost), and she scales into the late game.

The strategy

Angels are big, evasive, and individually powerful. The traditional problem with Angel tribal is that most Angels cost 4-7 mana, making the deck slow. Giada solves this by ramping into Angels and making each subsequent one enter bigger than it should be.

The plan:

  1. Cast Giada on turn 2
  2. Use her mana ability plus regular ramp to start casting Angels on turn 3-4
  3. Each Angel enters with counters, and flying means they connect almost every combat
  4. Lifegain from Angels like Angel of Vitality keeps you alive while the board grows

This is a combat-focused deck. You're turning big flyers sideways and gaining life doing it. It's not tricky — it's satisfying.

Key card categories

Ramp (~10 cards). Giada herself is ramp, but you want more. Sol Ring, Arcane Signet, Pearl Medallion (reduces cost of all your white spells), Knight of the White Orchid, and Burnished Hart. Starnheim Aspirant reduces the cost of Angel spells by {2}. Herald's Horn names Angels — cost reduction plus occasional card advantage.

Card draw (~8 cards). Mono-white card draw has improved dramatically. Esper Sentinel taxes opponents for drawing cards early. Welcoming Vampire draws when a creature with power 2 or less enters (many Angels enter as 2/2s before counters). Tome of Legends draws for {2} whenever your commander attacks. Mask of Memory on a flyer draws two and discards one every combat.

Removal (~8 cards). Swords to Plowshares and Path to Exile are the best targeted removal in the format. Generous Gift hits any permanent. Austere Command is a flexible board wipe. Angel of Sanctions exiles a nonland permanent and can be embalmed from the graveyard.

Angel payoffs. Archangel of Thune puts a +1/+1 counter on each creature you control whenever you gain life. With lifelink Angels, this triggers every combat. Righteous Valkyrie gives all your creatures +2/+2 when you have 27+ life (easy with Angels). Resplendent Angel creates a 4/4 Angel token at end of turn if you gained 5+ life.

Protection. Teferi's Protection phases out your entire board to dodge removal. Flawless Maneuver is free indestructible. Selfless Spirit sacrifices to save your board. White excels at this.

What the skeleton covers

The pre-built list gives you Giada plus 20+ Angels at various mana costs, ensuring a smooth curve from turn 2 through the late game. Ramp and protection spells round out the shell. The mana base is dead simple — almost entirely Plains with a few utility lands.

Where to customize

  • Lifegain: Add Serra Ascendant (a 6/6 flying lifelink for {W} if you have 30+ life), Heliod, Sun-Crowned, and Well of Lost Dreams for a lifegain subtheme.
  • Reanimation: Angels die. Karmic Guide, Emeria, the Sky Ruin, and Luminous Broodmoth bring them back. This adds resilience against board wipes.
  • Voltron: Sigarda's Splendor, Blackblade Reforged, and equipment that cares about high power. Giada's counters stack fast on a single Angel.

Giada is one of the best entry points into Commander. The deck is intuitive, the play pattern is clear, and Angels are some of the most visually striking cards in Magic. If you're building your first deck, this is a strong choice.
