Evaluating Your Deck's Power Level

"What power level is your deck?" is the question every Commander player gets asked. Most people get it wrong. Here's how to evaluate honestly.

Six factors

1. Speed — how quickly can you threaten a win?

  • Turns 3-4: cEDH (Bracket 5)
  • Turns 5-7: High power (Bracket 4)
  • Turns 8-10: Mid power (Bracket 3)
  • Turns 11+: Casual (Bracket 1-2)

This isn't "how quickly CAN the deck win with a perfect draw." It's "how quickly does the deck typically threaten a win in an average game."

2. Consistency — how reliably do you execute your game plan?

Tutors are the main driver. A deck with 6 tutors finds its key cards almost every game. A deck with 0 tutors plays differently each time.

  • 0-1 tutors: Bracket 1-2
  • 2-3 tutors: Bracket 3
  • 4-6 tutors: Bracket 4
  • 6+: Bracket 5

3. Interaction efficiency — how cheap is your removal and protection?

  • Free counterspells (Force of Will, Fierce Guardianship, Pact of Negation): Bracket 4-5
  • 1-2 mana interaction (Swords to Plowshares, Swan Song): Bracket 3+
  • 3+ mana interaction (Beast Within, Generous Gift): Bracket 2-3
  • Minimal interaction: Bracket 1

4. Mana base — how optimized is your land base?

  • Full fetch + dual lands: Bracket 4-5
  • Shock lands + check lands + pain lands: Bracket 3
  • Budget duals and tap lands: Bracket 1-2

5. Game Changers count

  • 0: Bracket 1-2
  • 1-3: Bracket 3
  • 4+: Bracket 4+

6. Combo density

  • No combos: Bracket 1-2
  • One combo, requires 3+ cards: Bracket 3
  • Two-card combos with tutors to find them: Bracket 4
  • Compact combos as primary win condition: Bracket 5

Self-evaluation checklist

Answer these honestly:

  • [ ] Can this deck win before turn 8 in a typical game?
  • [ ] Does this deck run any Game Changers?
  • [ ] Does this deck have a two-card infinite combo?
  • [ ] Does this deck run more than 3 tutors?
  • [ ] Does this deck run free counterspells or free interaction?
  • [ ] Is the mana base fully optimized (fetches, duals, shocks)?

0 checks = Bracket 1-2. 1-2 checks = Bracket 3. 3-4 checks = Bracket 4. 5-6 checks = Bracket 5.

Common miscalibrations

"My deck is a 7." The most common self-assessment in Commander. Almost every player says their deck is a 7 out of 10. This is because people overrate casual decks (they have Sol Ring so it must be strong) and underrate powerful decks (it's not cEDH so it can't be that high).

Use brackets instead of a 1-10 scale. Brackets have defined criteria. "7 out of 10" means nothing without shared context.

Confusing expensive cards with a powerful deck. Owning a Mana Crypt doesn't make your deck high-power if the rest is precon-level. Similarly, a well-built budget deck with efficient cards and a tight game plan can be Bracket 3-4 without expensive staples.

Confusing fun combos with cEDH. A 5-card combo that requires specific setup and doesn't win until turn 12 is not a competitive deck. It's a casual combo deck. cEDH decks win by turn 3-5 through interaction.
