Landfall
Landfall decks trigger abilities whenever a land enters the battlefield under your control. Since you play at least one land per turn naturally, these triggers are "free." Add extra land drop effects and fetch lands, and you're triggering landfall 3-5 times per turn.
The archetype is resilient because lands are the hardest permanent type to remove. Nobody runs mass land destruction in most groups. Your engine is effectively immune to interaction.
How it works
- Play extra land drop enablers (Azusa, Exploration, Oracle of Mul Daya)
- Deploy landfall payoffs (Avenger of Zendikar, Omnath, Scute Swarm)
- Play multiple lands per turn, triggering everything
- Recur lands from graveyard (Ramunap Excavator + fetch lands) for repeatable triggers
Key cards
Extra land drops:
- Azusa Lost but Seeking — play two additional lands per turn
- Exploration — play one additional land per turn (1 mana enchantment)
- Oracle of Mul Daya — play from the top of your library, one additional land per turn
- Dryad of the Ilysian Grove — one additional land, all your lands are every basic type
Landfall payoffs:
- Avenger of Zendikar — creates Plant tokens on ETB, all Plants get +1/+1 on each landfall
- Omnath Locus of Creation (4-color) — different effects on 1st, 2nd, 3rd landfall each turn
- Scute Swarm — makes a copy of itself on each landfall once you have 6+ lands. Exponential.
- Felidar Retreat — create a 2/2 Cat or put a +1/+1 counter on all your creatures per landfall
- Tireless Provisioner — create a Food or Treasure per landfall
Land recursion:
- Ramunap Excavator / Crucible of Worlds — play lands from your graveyard. Fetch lands become repeatable landfall triggers.
- Splendid Reclamation — return all lands from graveyard to battlefield. Mass landfall.
Strengths
Resilience. Lands don't get removed. Your engine survives board wipes.
Guaranteed triggers. You play lands every turn already. The baseline is free value.
Scales with fetch lands. Each fetch land triggers landfall twice (the fetch entering, then the land it finds entering).
Weaknesses
Requires green. Almost all extra land drop effects are green. Non-green landfall is extremely limited.
Slow without extra drops. One landfall per turn isn't enough. You need the enablers to make the deck work.
Mass land destruction. Rare, but Armageddon or Jokulhaups devastates you more than anyone since your board depends on land count.
Popular commanders
Omnath Locus of Creation (R/G/W/U) — multiple landfall triggers with different bonuses. Four colors of access.
Tatyova Benthic Druid (U/G) — draw a card and gain 1 life per land entering. Simple, effective, draws a lot of cards.
Lord Windgrace (B/R/G) — planeswalker commander that cycles lands, returns lands from graveyard, and destroys nonland permanents.
Omnath Locus of Rage (R/G) — creates 5/5 Elementals per landfall, deals 3 damage when Elementals die. Board wipe becomes 3 damage per token.
Typical colors
Green is mandatory. Blue adds card draw (Tatyova). Red adds damage-based landfall payoffs and Omnath variants. Simic (U/G), Gruul (R/G), and Temur (U/R/G) are common.
